Conch shell trumpet.
Late 19th or early 20th century.
Dimensions 31x15 cm.
A shell horn (horagai) with attached silk cord. The horagai
was used in premodern warfare to sound commands and is still in use with the
ascetic member of Shugendo religious order. The trumpet is one of the 16 items
that are of practical use
for the yamabushi during their ascetic sojourns in
the mountains.
