Artist: Hotei Gosei (Hokuga) (active 1804-44)
Subject: A bijin pounding cloth with a kinuta.
Signature: Hotei Gosei. Artist's seals.
Date: ca. 1810-40.
Size: Scroll 130x39 cm. Painting 66x27 cm.
Medium: Painting on silk. Black ink and colour.
Remarks: Hokuga was a pupil of Hokusai who after 1810 used the name Hotei Gosei and was a prolific painter of bijin in a highly individual, mannered style, he also made several surimono and illustrations for kyoka antologies. His name is frequently confused with the lesser known Karyosai Hokuga.
