Yashima Gakutei (1786?-1868)

Subject: Couple on the bridge at Kamejima.
Series: Edo meisho mitate junishi (Famous places in Edo as the twelve animals of the zodiac). This print is associated with the Hare zodiacal sign.
Signature: Gakutei
Date: ca. 1835
Size: Surimono shikishiban,  21,2x18,8 cm.
Remarks: Another example is illustrated in Charlotte van Rappard-Boon. Catalogue of the Collection of Japanese Prints Part III Hokusai and His School, Japanese Prints c. 1800-1840. Rijksprentenkabinet. Amsterdam: Rijksprentenkabinet Rijksmuseum, 1982, no. 263.
According the description in the catalogue this series of surimono was designed by Gakutei for the Ichiyoren, a subdivision of the Katsushikaren group of poets.
Conditions: Very good impression, colour and conditions.
