UTAGAWA SCHOOL (1840 ca.) A geisha and attendant. (Sold)

Artist: Unidentified artist probably from the Utagawa, Toyokuni school.
Subject: A geisha is shown standing holding a roll of paper in the obi and with the other hand a flap of the kimono. Her hair is in the tsubashi-Shimada style, with a long hair stick, comb, and hairpins. At her feet, her assistant is intent on tying a furoshiki around a box and at the same time she seems to gaze amazed on her right, perhaps at a red seal on the woman's obi.
Signature: Apparently unsigned. Two characters and seal are painted on the collar of the geisha (Bun-Shi ?), possibly the artist's signature.
Date: ca.1840
Size: The scroll 167x50 cm, the painted part 88x33 cm
Medium: Painting, ink and color on paper.
Remarks: An unusual painting for the expression of the girl at the geisha's feet and for the treatment of her clothes.
Conditions: Good conditions.
