Subject: A geisha dressed as a man holding a lantern during the festival. In Yoshiwara, the pleasure district of Edo, a festival called niwaka (impromptu) was celebrated during the eighth month. Courtesans dressed in various costumes performed lion dances and impromptu skits on the main street, Nakano-chō.

Publisher: Unshuya Matabei. This publisher published between 1830 and 1860 some series of fan prints designed by Kunisada.
Size: Uchiwa-e (Print for rigid fan) 22.5x28.5 cm.

Remarks: Fan prints are always particularly rare. This Kunisada specimen from the 1830s is notable for the exceptional finesse of the impression.
